Myocardium

The heart is a hollow muscular organ that pumps oxygenated blood throughout the body and deoxygenated blood to the lungs. It is composed of four chambers. One chamber on the right side receives waste blood (from the body) and another chamber pumps it to the lungs, where the waste is exhaled. One chamber on the left side receives oxygen-rich blood from the lungs and another pumps that nutrient-rich blood to the body. Two valves control the flow of blood into the heart chambers and two valves control the flow of blood out of the heart.

The muscular wall of the heart has three layers. The outermost layer is the epicardium (or visceral pericardium). The epicardium covers the heart, envelops the roots of the great blood vessels, and adheres the heart wall to a protective sac. The middle layer is the myocardium. This powerful muscular tissue drives the heart’s pump function. Its innermost layer, the endocardium, lines the internal structures of the heart.

What is the heart

The cause of pericarditis should be identified, if possible.High doses of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, are often given with a medication called colchicine. These medications decrease pain and reduce swelling or inflammation of the sac around the heart. In some cases you will be asked to take them for days to weeks or longer. If the cause of pericarditis is an infection:Other medications that may be used include:If the fluid buildup causes the heart to work poorly, treatment may include:If pericarditis is chronic, comes back after treatment, or causes scarring or stiffening of the tissue around the heart, surgery called pericardiectomy may be needed. The operation involves cutting or removing part of the pericardium.      Outlook (Prognosis)
