Its primitive settlers were Chichimecas, Otomíes, Toltecas and Nahuatlacas. The town was originally settled in a place called Teochichán or Techinchán: place of the Almighty God or where snares and traps abound.

The Franciscans headed by Fray Juan Calero, populated the current site of Tequila, with indigenous groups brought from the hill of Chiquihuitillo, founding the town of Santiago de Tequila on April 15, 1530; which was given in entrustment to Juan de Escárcena.

By decree of March 27, 1824, Tequila became the head of the department and in the same disposition it was granted the title of town. Since that date Tequila has existed as a municipality.

Viceroy Antonio de Mendoza stayed in Tequila from October to December, to quell the insurrection of the Caxcan Indians, which he achieved with the capture of the Miztón hill (in the Morones mountain range, northwest of Juchipila, Zacatecas), in December.

The mezcal plant that appears on the top of the shield is an allegory to the name of the municipality, which is derived from the Nahuatl “tequíllan” that is composed of the words “tequílli” (cut) and “tlan” (between) and is translated as “cut place” or “place where it is cut”. Other nahuatlatos interpret it as “place of tributes”.
